1/20/2024 6:13:00 PM

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Jan. 20, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team competed Saturday at the New York State Collegiate Championships, held on the campus of Nassau Community College. After a spirited day of competition, the Mariners finished with 48 total team points to claim sixth place overall in the tournament. Three wrestlers placed highly in the Open bracket of their weight class while two other Mariners were successful in the Freshman/Sophomore invitationals as part of the meet.

Meet Link Sophomore Corey Haney (Medina, Ohio) captured fifth-place honors at the 141-pound 'Open' weight class. After a first-round bye, Haney earned a second-round pinfall victory over Elmira's Blake O'Brien in the first period of grappling. He advanced to the quarterfinals, where he was bested by eventual champion Sam Ewing of Division I Buffalo in his next match. The defeat moved Haney into the fifth-place match where he recorded a second pinfall victory on the afternoon, this time over Matt Ash in the beginning of the second period.

First-year wrestler Jacob Brockey (Syosset, N.Y.) took fourth-place laurels at the 157-pound 'Open' weight class for the Mariners. Following a first-round bye, Brockey scored a 12-7 decision victory over Ithaca's Joseph Averill to move onto the semi-finals. There, he faced and was defeated by Nassau's Kristopher Ketchum to move into the third-place match where he lost an 8-2 decision to Oneonta State's Max Yahre.

Junior Jimmy Dunagan (Boulder City, Nev.) rounded out the podium results in the 'Open' invitational with a third-place effort at 197 pounds. Dunagan won his quarterfinal match-up against NYU's Finn Eskeland via pinfall before dropping the semi-final bout to Reid Schroeder of Army Prep, the eventual champion. The junior was awarded third place due to a medical forfeit in the consolation final.

In the Freshman/Sophomore portion of the invitational, Matthew Trinidad (Mesa, Ariz.) took home third-place recognition in the 149-pound weight class. Trinidad was victorious via a 6-3 decision in his quarterfinal match with Oswego State's Payne Weinhauer before losing the semi-final bout due to a third-period pinfall. In the consolation match final, Trinidad recorded a 21-6 technical-fall victory against Benjamin Lloyd of Alfred State.

Fellow first-year wrestler Calvin Brown (Savannah, Ga.) wrestled to a fourth-place finish at the 174-pound class of the Freshman/Sophomore bracket. Brown first defeated Oswego State's James Sturek in a second-period pinfall before taking down Eli Bonet of Brockport in the quarterfinals via a 6-3 decision. Brown was bested by eventual champion Aiden Poe of Niagara Community College in the semifinals and lost the third-place match by pinfall against Brockport's Kiam Coleman.
