KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team hosted Rhode Island College and the University of Southern Maine as part of the Mariner Duals on Saturday, hosted by the Mariners at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners posted a total of six pinfalls on the day and bested their opponents, defeating RIC by a 28-12 score and Southern Maine in a 36-10 finale to improve to 4-4 in dual-meet competition on the year.

The Mariners took four of the first five bouts versus Rhode Island College in their opening dual match, including a 9-1 major decision victory by sophomore
Wesley Wydick (Utica, Ohio) at the 133-pound weight class. Following a 15-9 decision win from sophomore
Corey Haney (Medina, Ohio) at 141 pounds to put the USMMA ahead by a 7-4 margin, junior
Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) scored a pinfall victory at 149 pounds to put the Mariners up by a 13-4 margin.

Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) recorded a four-point minor technical fall win at the 157-pound weight class to give USMMA a 17-4 lead. Following a 6-2 decision at 174 in favor of sophomore
Ivan Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.), the Mariners picked up victories in the final two bouts of the dual to seal the victory. Juniors
Jimmy Dunagan (Boulder City, Nev.) and
Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) earned four points apiece via major-decision wins to complete the final score of 28-12.

In the Mariners' second and final match of the afternoon, freshman
Colin Dragon (Richmond Hill, Ga.) set the tone by pinning his opponent at the 125-pound weight class in just over two minutes of action. Southern Maine scored two consecutive victories following the opening contest, but Pinc's second pinfall win of the day gave the Mariners a 12-7 lead.

USMMA would go on to win five of the final six bouts with pinfall wins coming from freshman
Matthew Ferrucci (Killingworth, Conn.) in the 165-pound match, freshman
Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) at 184 pounds, and Garrison in the 285-pound contest. Corral added three points at the 174-pound class with an 8-2 decision victory and first-year
Grant Mathias (Rockwood, Pa.) also captured three points via a 6-3 decision win at 197 pounds.

The Mariners return to action on Jan. 20 in the New York State Collegiate Championship meet hosted by Nassau Community College. The meet will start at 10 a.m.
