KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2023) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team won a nail-biter on Tuesday night against visiting Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's-Long Island, 3-2, inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners improve to 3-5 (1-1 Skyline) with the win, while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-5 (1-1 Skyline) with the loss.

USMMA won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-16, to build up a 2-0 lead in the match, however the Golden Eagles would not go quietly. The visitors stormed back with 25-20 and 25-19 wins in the third and fourth sets, respectively, to set up a decisive fifth set.
With seemingly all the momentum, St. Joe's raced out to a 10-5 lead in the final set, but the Mariners kept chipping away and chipping away, eventually cutting the deficit to just one point (12-11) and forcing the Golden Eagles to burn their final timeout.
Out of that breather, a point for St. Joseph's made it 13-11, but the Mariners rattled off three-straight to come within match-point of winning, 14-13. The Golden Eagles tied it back up with a kill, however two-straight kills for the Mariners by freshman
Erin Stillinger (Keller, Texas) and senior
Amy Jones (Roscoe, Ill.) gave the Mariners the victory in the marathon match.
Stillinger tied for the match-high, as she put down a career-best 19 kills on a .292 hitting clip to go along with four blocks. Senior
Meredith Buchanan (Kathleen, Ga.) recorded 12 kills and 17 digs for a double-double, while freshman setter
Alexa Tipps (Palmdale, Calif.) just missed out on one with 43 assists and nine digs.
Sophomore libero
Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) led all players on the night with 36 digs for her third match of the season with 30+ digs.
Jones finished the night with eight kills and tied Stillinger with four blocks, while senior
Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas) and sophomore
Virginia Robert (Lynchburg, Va.) both added six kills apiece, with both of them also in double-digit digs – Robert with 14 and Breland with 10.
For the Golden Eagles, Jackie Wolf tied Stillinger with 19 kills as part of a 14-dig double-double effort and Madison Gremli chipped in with 15 kills. Senior Karen Barrera Carreno split the setting duties and recorded a team-high 25 assists. Katie D'Angelo served as the setter for the first two sets and dished out 13 assists, while also picking up 18 digs. Libero April Sexton had a team-high 20 digs.
