DANBURY, Conn. (Sept. 2, 2023) – On Saturday, the USMMA women's volleyball team opened up the 2023 season up at tri-match hosted by Western Connecticut State. The Mariners dropped both matchups on the day, a nail-biting 3-2 defeat to the University of Hartford and a 3-0 sweep at the hands of the host Wolves.

In the opener against the Hawks, two Mariners recorded double-doubles, as senior
Meredith Buchanan (Kathleen, Ga.) put down 19 kills to lead all players to go along with 15 digs, while freshman setter
Alexa Tipps (Palmdale, Calif.) dished out 34 assists while also picking up 15 digs.
Three other Mariners had double-digit dig efforts – sophomore libero
Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) was all over the back row, putting up a remarkable 37 digs, senior
Amy Jones (Roscoe, Ill.) contributed a career-high 22 digs and classmate
Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas) had 11. Freshman
Erin Stillinger (Keller, Texas) led the Mariners in hitting percentage with a .357 (7K-2E/14TA).
Schatzman's 37 digs are the most in a single match since former Mariner standout
Dominique Pope '18 recorded 36 during a match in 2014. (The Academy record for a single match is 40 digs.)
In the second match of the day against the host Wolves, Breland led the way offensively with six kills, while Tipps handed out 11 assists and Jones had a team-best seven digs.
