Mariners End Mayor’s Cup With 2-0 Loss At Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2023) – The USMMA men's soccer team lost its road matchup to Hartwick College, 2-0, on the second day of the 2023 Mayor's Cup Classic in Upstate New York on Sunday afternoon. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 0-4-1, while the Hawks improve to 1-2-1 in victory.
 
Game Link The Hawks got on the board early with multiple pushes into the opposing third. A promising attack was halted, but Timmy McQueeney took the ball off the defender and sank the first goal of the game from the top of the penalty box in the 13th minute.
 
With the first half coming to a close, Hartwick was outshooting the Mariners, 8-5, and was winning the corner battle, 6-3.
 
The second half kicked off and the Mariners began to show resistance and build attacks of their own. A dangerous attack formed by USMMA, but would come to a halt as they had an open shot, but it sailed over the Hartwick goal.
 
The Hawks' defense stepped up late, as they stopped multiple attacks all over the field and denied several clears. Hartwick notched one more goal by Sean Burke, assisted by Andres Ordonez Acosta in the 74th minute.
 
Senior Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) made five saves in the losing effort. For Hartwick, Aden Razukiewicz posted a clean sheet in his first start of the season, picking up three saves.
 
The Mariners open Skyline Conference action on Wednesday night when they host Yeshiva University in a rematch of the 2022 Skyline Championship Game.
