KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 13, 2023) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team was less than three minutes away from its first victory of the season, however a late tally by visiting Yeshiva resulted in a 1-1 draw in the Mariners' Skyline Conference-opener Wednesday night at Bartoszek Field. The tie in this rematch of the 2022 Skyline Championship Final moves USMMA's record to 0-4-2 (0-0-1 Skyline), while the Maccabees move to 2-1-2 (2-0-2 Skyline).

It was the Macs who came out firing from all angles in the first half, as they outshot Merchant Marine 7-2 in the opening 45 minutes. Senior keeper Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) was kept on his toes and sprawled out to make two saves. The Mariners' lone shot on goal of the half from the foot of junior Fensom Hensley (Cumberland, R.I.) was turned aside by YU's Kellian Marty.
 
The home squad reversed the script early in the second half, as USMMA fired off the first six shots (five on goal), finally opening the scoring on the night in the 57th minute when sophomore John Germain (Cornwall, N.Y.) perfectly placed a free kick from 20 yards out into the open right side of the net for his second of the season.
 
Junior Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) nearly made it 2-0 in the 60th minute, but a defensive save by Yeshiva kept it a one-goal game. The Maccabees turned the pressure on late and Carey was forced to make two more saves the remainder of the game (ending with a total of four for the night).
 
However, the Macs' leading scorer Andrea Lacche fired four shots towards Carey in the half (two on goal) and it was his last in the 88th minute that stood as the equalizer. He corralled a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box after a shot seconds before from a teammate was blocked, and he moved in and fired a shot high into the right side of the net.
 
For Yeshiva, Marty finished with four saves between the pipes.
 
The Mariners return to action on Sunday, Sept. 17, at home against non-conference opponent Penn State-Harrisburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Tomb Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
