UNION, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2023) – A two-goal halftime deficit proved too much to overcome as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team was defeated by Kean, 2-1, in the 2023 season-opener.
Sophomore
Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for USMMA (1-0), while senior keeper
Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) stopped three shots. Kean (1-0) benefitted from a 10-2 shot advantage as part of its two-goal first half.

Kean was quick to test Carey in the fourth minute, but the USMMA keeper made the stop. Carey made another save in the 21st minute before the Cougars grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute as Nico Ibanez converted a penalty kick.
The Cougars doubled their lead in the 42nd minute and took a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Neither team had a shot on goal in the second half until the 72nd minute when Hofstetter found the back of the net and pulled USMMA to within 2-1. Kean looked to answer quickly in the 75th minute, but Carey turned away a shot attempt to keep it a one-goal game.
The Mariners had one final attempt to equalize in the 85th minute, but a shot to the lower corner by freshman
Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) was stopped and Kean held on for the 2-1 victory.
USMMA returns to action on Sept. 3 with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against NYU at Douglass Field in Newark, N.J. Live stats and a live video feed of the contest will be available with links on
