Mariners Drop Road Matchup Against NYU, 3-1

NEWARK, N.J. (Sept. 3, 2023) – The USMMA men's soccer team lost its road matchup against NYU on Sunday evening, 3-1, in a game played on the campus of Rutgers-Newark. In defeat, the Mariners' record drops to 0-2 on the season, while the Violets improve to 1-1 with the victory.

Game Link It was a chaotic opening 10 minutes, as NYU wasted little time getting on the board. Terra Nagai found the back of the net just 24 seconds after the opening whistle off a feed from Eric Smits. However, the Mariners answered right back with an equalizer, as freshman Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) scored his first of the season in the third minute.

Just under five minutes later, though, the Violets scored once again not long after a corner kick, with Bryce Lexow getting one past senior keeper Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) to give the hosts back the lead.

The Violets outshot Merchant Marine, 8-3 in the opening half, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The second half was almost all NYU, as they sent a total of 15 shots in Carey's direction, including seven on goal. Carey turned aside six of them, but the Violets added an insurance goal just over 15 minutes in on their seventh shot of the half by Arkan Tahsildaroglu.

Carey finished the game with eight saves.

Up next, the Mariners will host arch-rival Coast Guard on Thursday evening, Sept. 7, in their 142 Game. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the fixture will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
