KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 1, 2023) – A walk-off single by sophomore
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) with two outs in the 11th inning capped a 7-6 victory as the USMMA baseball team responded from a 5-3 loss in game one to split a doubleheader against Manhattanville. USMMA saw its record move to 21-13 (9-7 Skyline), while Manhattanville moved to 16-19 (9-7 Skyline).
Game 1
USMMA held a 3-2 lead after five innings, but Manhattanville plated two in the sixth and one in the seventh to rally past the Mariners, 5-3. Clapsaddle finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored.
Â
After
Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, the Mariners put together a two-out rally to grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame on a Clapsaddle RBI single.
Â
Felton tossed a 1-2-3 second and took advantage of a lineout double play to face just three batters in the third frame, but the Valiants knotted the score at 1-1 in the fourth as a single with a fielding error in the outfield allowed a run to score.
Â
Manhattanville then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fifth without the benefit of a hit against the USMMA bullpen. Back-to-back walks opened the frame and both runners tagged up on a fly ball before a wild pitch chased home a run.
Â
USMMA answered immediately to retake the lead in the bottom of frame. A leadoff single was erased on a fielder's choice before a single by sophomore
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) set up runners on first and second. Reistetter then tied the game with an RBI ground-rule double before senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) put the Mariners up by a 3-2 score with an RBI groundout.
Â
The Valiants, however, took the lead right back with two runs in the sixth as a sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI single made it 4-3.
Â
Manhattanville made it 5-3 with an insurance run in the seventh as an errant throw on a dropped third strike set the table for a two-out RBI single.
Â
Game 2
Tied at 5-5 after just three innings, neither team scored again until the 11th when the Valiants plated one run only to see the Mariners score two and win on a two-out walk-off single by Clapsaddle. USMMA pounded out 17 hits in the game as six players recorded multi-hit performances. Clapsaddle and sophomore
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) each went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Millen was 2-for-6 with two RBI. Reistetter was 3-for-6 with one RBI and Chambers finished 3-for-5 with a run scored.
Â
The Mariners found themselves in an immediate 3-0 hole after the top of the first, but responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Reistetter put USMMA on the board with an RBI single before Clapsaddle made it 3-2 with a sacrifice fly.
Â
A leadoff walk and a double in the top of the second set the table for a sacrifice fly and an RBI single as the Valiants grabbed two runs right back and took a 5-2 lead.
Â
USMMA then took advantage of an error to plate a run in the bottom of the second. Freshman
Quin Fitzgerald (Jupiter, Fla.) singled with one out before classmate
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) reached on an error and Millen made it 5-3 with an RBI single.
Â
The Mariners then pulled even with two runs in the third. Chambers led off with a single and freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) followed with a one-out single before Leatherwood roped a two-run double to the wall in right center to make it a 5-5 ballgame.
Â
Freshman
Edward Lippert (Deer Park, N.Y.) took the mound in the sixth and worked a quick 1-2-3 frame. The righty also worked 1-2-3 frames in the seventh and eighth, eventually retiring 10-straight and 12-of-13 to keep the Valiants off the board and help send the game to extra innings. Lippert pitched into the 10th and totaled seven strikeouts in 4.2 scoreless innings of work before classmate
Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) entered to record the final out of the frame.
Â
The Valiants broke the 5-5 tie in the 11th after loading the bases with no outs. The Mariners nearly escaped the jam, but a two-out walk forced in the go-ahead run as Manhattanville took a 6-5 lead.
Â
USMMA answered, however, and won the game with two runs in the home half of the 11th. Down to the final strike with two outs and a runner on second, Millen lined an RBI single into center to tie the game at 6-6. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Clapsaddle won the game with his walk-off infield single.
Â
USMMA returns to action on May 6, hosting St. Joseph's-Long Island for a Skyline doubleheader at noon. Live stats and live video will be available on USMMASports.com with links on
