Cahalan Walk-Off Leads Mariners To DH Split With St. Joseph’s-Long Island

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 6, 2023) – Freshman Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) had a two-out, walk-off single to cap a 6-5 game one victory, but the USMMA baseball team had to settle for a split against St. Joseph's-Long Island after a 10-3 defeat in game two. USMMA saw its record go to 22-14 (10-8 Skyline), while St. Joseph's-Long Island moved to 26-8 (14-4 Skyline). Game 1
USMMA took its first lead of the game in the sixth, but surrendered the game-tying run in the top of the seventh before Cahalan gave the Mariners the walk-off win. Cahalan finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, while senior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) was 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Junior Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) earned the win (5-3) after striking out five and surrendering five runs in a complete game effort. Reistetter helped his own cause, going 1-for-4 with an RBI at the plate.

After the Golden Eagles grabbed the lead with a solo home run in the top of the second, USMMA needed just two batters to level the score in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) led off the inning with a triple to the wall in right center and sophomore Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) promptly lined an RBI single into left to tie the game at 1-1.

St. Joseph's-Long Island immediately retook a 3-1 lead in the third courtesy of back-to-back two-out RBI singles.

USMMA pulled even once again with a two-run fourth. Leatherwood started things by grounding a one-out double inside the first base bag before junior Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) walked and a Cahalan sacrifice bunt set up runners on second and third with two outs. Zanetti then roped a two-run triple to the wall in center to make it a 3-3 ballgame.

The Golden Eagles pulled ahead, 4-3, with a run in the sixth after a two-out walk came around to score on an RBI single.

The Mariners took their first lead of the contest with a pair of two-out runs in the sixth. After the Golden Eagles went to the bullpen and intentionally walked Zanetti with a runner on third and two outs, sophomore Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) tied the game with an RBI infield single to deep short. Reistetter then gave his squad a 5-4 lead with an RBI single to center.

Down to their final three outs, the Golden Eagles promptly tied the game at 5-5 with a solo home run to open the seventh.

USMMA, however, took advantage of back-to-back two-out walks to rally for the victory. Following a leadoff single, a double play had the Mariners down to their final out. Leatherwood and Garner drew back-to-back walks to extend the inning and Cahalan gave USMMA the 6-5 win with a walk-off single.

Game 2
Trailing just 2-0 through five innings, USMMA allowed eight runs in the next three innings and was defeated by a 10-3 margin. Leatherwood finished 3-for-4 for USMMA, while Cahalan went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Millen, Reistetter and Darling had an RBI apiece.

St. Joseph's-Long Island scored on a wild pitch in the first and added another run in the fifth, but USMMA was held to just one hit through the first five innings and trailed, 2-0.

The Golden Eagles broke open the game with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh before tacking on three more in the eighth for a 10-0 advantage.

USMMA got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the eighth. Following a Cahalan single and a Zanetti double, Millen and Reistetter made it 10-2 with back-to-back RBI groundouts.

The Mariners made it 10-3 with another run in the ninth as a leadoff double by sophomore Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) set the table for a Darling RBI groundout.

USMMA returns to action on May 7, concluding the regular season with a noon doubleheader on the road at Mount Saint Mary. Live stats and live video will be available on USMMASports.com with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
