TEANECK, N.J. (April 16, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team split a Skyline doubleheader against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, coming up short in a 7-5 loss in game one before earning the split with a 9-5 triumph in game two. USMMA is now 14-10 (4-4 Skyline) on the season, while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn is 9-13 (4-4 Skyline).
Senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) became the 17th member of the USMMA 100-hit club in the second game of the day. Chambers is the third player this season to reach the milestone. Freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) also hit safely in both games to push his hitting streak to 18.
Game 1
USMMA plated five unanswered runs to come back from an early 4-0 deficit, but St. Joseph's-Brooklyn rallied late and held on for a 7-5 win. Junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead USMMA, while Chambers went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and sophomore
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the third before a three-run home run helped the Bears take a 4-0 lead. USMMA answered in the fourth as sophomore
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) made it 4-1 with an RBI groundout.
The Mariners then took the lead in the fifth with a four-run inning of their own. Freshman
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) had an RBI sacrifice bunt and Millen had an RBI double before a Reistetter RBI groundout tied the game. Chambers then put USMMA up, 5-4, with an RBI double.
The Bears, however, tied the game on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth and plated a pair of two-out runs in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. The Mariners stranded runners on the corners in the top of the seventh as St. Joseph's-Brooklyn held on for the win.
Game 2
USMMA trailed by two early before plating seven unanswered runs en route to a 9-5 victory. Reistetter finished 4-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored, while Clapsaddle went 3-for-5 with two RBI to pace USMMA. Chambers joined the program's 100-hit club as part of a 3-for-5 day at the plate and Darling
extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a 1-for-4 effort. Sophomore
Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Va.) improved to 4-0 after allowing two runs in 5.0 innings of work.
After the Bears took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, USMMA leveled the score with a pair of runs in the fourth. Reistetter put the Mariners on the board with a solo home run before Darling made it a 2-2 ballgame with an RBI single.
The Mariners took the lead in the sixth after a Reistetter single and a Chambers double set the table for a Clapsaddle two-run single that gave USMMA a 4-2 lead.
An RBI double by senior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) opened the scoring in the seventh as USMMA tacked on three more runs. Chambers added an RBI single before sophomore
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) made it 7-2 with a sacrifice fly.
The Bears pulled closer with two runs in the home half of the seventh, but the Mariners answered with two runs of their own in the ninth. After a run-scoring error, junior
Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) made it 9-4 with an RBI double.
A solo home run in the bottom of the ninth created the final margin.
