Three Homers In Game Two Help Mariners Earn Split At Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 15, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team split a Skyline doubleheader at Farmingdale State, coming up short by a 4-3 margin in game one before blasting three home runs en route to a 9-2 victory in game two. USMMA is now 13-9 (3-3 Skyline), while Farmingdale State sits at 11-10 (3-4 Skyline). Game 1
The Mariners were held to just four hits, matching a season-low, and could not overcome an early 3-0 deficit in a 4-3 loss. Junior Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for USMMA, while senior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) and classmate Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) added an RBI apiece. Reistetter (3-2) went the distance on the mound and allowed four runs, three earned, to go with three strikeouts.

The Rams plated a run in the first and added a two-run home run in the third to grab a 3-0 lead. A leadoff double by Reistetter set up a Chambers sacrifice fly in the fourth as the Mariners pulled to within 3-1.

Farmingdale State, however, took advantage of an error in the fifth to regain a three-run lead, 4-1. Reistetter added an RBI single in the sixth before a leadoff double in the seventh by freshman Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) set up a Zanetti sacrifice fly, but USMMA would strand the tying run at first to end the game.

Game 2
USMMA jumped out to a 7-0 lead and blasted three home runs to earn a split with a 9-2 victory. Zanetti finished 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI to help pace USMMA, while freshman Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI. Reistetter added a two-run home run and Darling went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Sophomore Jacob Syversen (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) had five strikeouts and surrendered just two runs in 6.0 innings of work to earn the win.

Darling put the Mariners on the board with a sacrifice fly in the second before Zanetti led off the third with a solo home run that made it a 2-0 ballgame.

USMMA then put up a three-spot in the fourth as sophomore Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) had an RBI double and Cahalan added an RBI single before Zanetti made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly.

The Mariners tacked onto their lead in the sixth as Cahalan launched his first-career home run, a two-run blast that made it 7-0.

The Rams broke into the scoring column with two runs in the seventh, but Reistetter pushed the lead back to seven with a two-run homer in the ninth for the final 9-2 margin.

The USMMA baseball team returns to action on April 16, traveling to Teaneck, N.J., to take on St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a Skyline doubleheader at noon. Live stats and live video will be available on USMMASports.com with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
