WestConn Defeats Mariners In Sudden Death For Second Straight Season

DANBURY, Conn. (March 2, 2023) – The United States Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team held a three-goal advantage with just over four minutes remaining in regulation, but Western Connecticut used three unanswered scores, including a man-up goal with 1:43 left, to tie the game before completing the comeback in overtime, as the Wolves won, 16-15, on another man-up situation during sudden death.
 
Game Link The men from Kings Point held the upper-hand in the face-off circle (20-15), logged more saves (10-9), and scooped up an equal amount of ground balls (30-30), but the Wolves got off over 20 more shots than the Mariners (50-29), while capitalizing on all three of its extra-man opportunities in the fourth quarter and overtime to pull the win out.
 
Freshman William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the offensive catalyst for USMMA, securing a team-best seven points on four goals and three assists, with all of his on-target shots finding the back of the net.
 
Sophomore Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.) was a stud on the turf, corralling a game-high 11 grounders while winning 20-of-34 faceoffs (58.8%).
 
Both freshmen Sal Castellano (Oakdale, N.Y.) and Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) caused a pair of turnovers each, with the duo collecting three ground balls apiece as well.
 
Sophomore Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) picked up a trio of goals plus an assist for a solid four-point afternoon, freshman Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) and senior Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) netted three goals separately, plus freshman Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) registered two goals and two assists, respectively.
 
Senior Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) spent the day prowling between the pipes, notching his tenth career double-figure save outing with 10 stops total.
 
The Mariners return to the friendly confines of Brooks Stadium and Captain James Harvey Tomb Field on Saturday afternoon, March 4, at 3 p.m. to tangle with the Seahawks of Salve Regina. Live links for the game can be found on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
