Mariners Erase Seven-Goal Deficit Over Final 18+ Minutes To Stun Rangers In Overtime

MADISON, N.J. (March 18, 2023) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team fell behind 15-8 with 3:31 remaining in the third quarter before embarking on a 9-2 surge to send the game to overtime with Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) capping the comeback win with a rocket into the back of the net for an improbable 18-17 win on the road over the Drew University Rangers.

Game Link Merchant Marine Academy was the better squad in terms of shots (61-41), shots-on-goal (37-28), turnover margin (plus-two, 18-20), successful clears (16-15), and ground balls (48-43) while sitting just one face-off win off the Rangers' pace (20-19).

Hall, the game-winning hero, led the Mariners with seven points, five goals, 18 shots, and 12 on-target attempts, all of which are new career-highs.

Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) and Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) tied for the contest-best of five goals (six points total) and four assists (five points total), respectively.

William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was responsible for the tying score from Hall, evening the score at 17-all with just eight seconds left in regulation.

Freshman Tucker Swinerton (Weston, Fla.) came into the day with 32:37 minutes in between the pipes and two saves but eclipsed both of those with ease, relieving Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) to spend 47 minutes and 23 minutes in goal while notching 11 saves for his first career victory.

Chris Neuman (South Huntington, New York) tied his career-high of 11 ground balls and captured 15 of the club's 19 face-offs (78.9%).

Adam Johnson (Canton, Ohio) was a perfect 4-for-4 in face-offs and Dom Mireck (Stevensville, Md.) caused a tied for match-most three turnovers.

USMMA will attempt to climb back to .500 for the campaign on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. start time at Vassar in Poughkeepsie, New York. Live links for the game can be found on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
