Game Two Walk-Off Helps Baseball Sweep DH Against Russell Sage

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team recorded a pair of wins against Russell Sage College to notch its second doubleheader sweep in as many days. The Mariners (4-0) rode their offense to a 14-6 victory against the Gators (0-2) in game one before a game two pitchers' duel ended with a 3-2 walk-off triumph.

Senior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and five RBI to lead the Mariners, while junior Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) went 1-for-3 with a triple and four RBI. Sophomore Jacob Syversen (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out five in 4.2 innings for the victory.

After Sage had a runner thrown out at home to end a scoreless top of the first, a two-run triple by Chambers helped USMMA take a 3-0 lead in the first. Chambers came through again in the second with a two-run double as part of a four-run frame that gave the Mariners a 7-0 advantage after just two innings.

USMMA eventually led 9-3 before sending eight men to the plate as part of a five-run fifth that made it a 14-3 ballgame. Reistetter had the big knock in the inning, a bases-clearing three-run triple.

Game 2
Junior Kellen Brown (Fort Pierce, Fla.) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off triple and finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Sophomore Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) had an RBI and a run scored, while Chambers went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Freshman Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) earned the win with 2.0 scoreless innings in relief of classmate Kade Frazier (Tuscola, Texas), who had six strikeouts in 5.0 innings of two-run ball.

The Gators took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as back-to-back walks opened the frame and came around to score on a one-out double. USMMA took advantage of a pair of errors to even the score with two runs in the second. Clapsaddle reached on an error to plate a runner from a third before Brown had an RBI groundout.

Frazier, who did not allow a hit after the first inning, worked a 1-2-3 fifth and retired the final five batters he faced.

With the game still tied in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) set the table with a one-out walk. Brown then chased home the game-winning run with a triple to right field as the Mariners walked-off with a 3-2 victory.

The USMMA baseball team is back in action at Bartoszek Field on Saturday, March 4, with a noon doubleheader against Ithaca. Live stats and a live video feed of the games will be available on USMMASports.com with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
