Baseball Swept In Doubleheader By No. 19 Ithaca

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 4, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team strung together late rallies in both ends of a doubleheader against No. 19 Ithaca, but the Bombers ultimately came away with a pair of wins. USMMA (4-2) rallied to take the lead in the sixth inning of the opener before Ithaca (4-1) went on to take the seven-inning contest, 8-4. USMMA then tied game two with a ninth-inning rally only to have the Bombers escape with a 10-3 win in 10 innings.

Game Links Game 1
USMMA took the lead with two outs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run double by sophomore Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.), but Ithaca plated five runs in the top of the seventh to win. Leatherwood finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the Mariners, while sophomore Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The game was scoreless through three innings before the Bombers put up a three-spot in the top of the fourth. USMMA answered immediately with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) led off with a double before Millen reached on an infield single, but an error on the play allowed the Mariners to get on the board. Leatherwood then came through with a two-out RBI single to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth when USMMA rallied to take the lead. Millen started things with a one-out single before senior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) extended the frame with a two-out single. Leatherwood followed with a clutch two-run double to right and the Mariners took a 4-3 lead into the final frame.

Game 2
Sophomore Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) had a game-tying, two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Ithaca put up seven runs in the 10th inning to complete the sweep. Clapsaddle finished 2-for-4, while Chambers went 1-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored. Junior Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) scattered nine hits in 7.0 innings of three-run ball for a no-decision.

The Mariners had just three hits through the first eight innings and faced a 3-0 deficit heading to the bottom of the ninth against the Ithaca bullpen. Junior Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) set the table with a one-out walk before Chambers put the Mariners on the board with an RBI double. An infield single by Leatherwood setup runners on first and third before a strikeout had the Bombers one out away from victory. After freshman Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) pinch-ran and stole second, Clapsaddle leveled the score at 3-3 with a two-run single into centerfield.

The USMMA baseball team next heads to Tennessee for a five-game road swing that begins on March 14 with a 2 p.m. game against Rhodes. Live stats and a live video feed of the games will be available on USMMASports.com with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
