Men’s Lacrosse Declaws AMCats In Home-Opening Rout

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2023) – The United States Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team opened the season with a 24-6 home win over Anna Maria College on Saturday at Tomb Field. The Mariners (1-0) quickly asserted dominance and held a 14-1 advantage at the halftime break before putting the game into cruise control from there to claim the victory over the AMCats (1-3).

Game Links USMMA launched an incredible 68 shots on the Anna Maria goalkeepers, placing 42 of them on-target for a 61.8% shot-on-goal percentage. The men also converted all of their 18 clears, nearly doubled up the AmCats in ground balls (52-28) and forced 26 turnovers while committing just 12.

The Mariners played unselfish lacrosse, as 12 players cracked the point tally with freshman Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) leading the way with six (5G, 1A), followed by senior Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) at five (3G, 2A), then a slew of student-athletes, five to be exact, that came in third with four points apiece.

Sophomore Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) scored his four points off his own generosity, all assists, to go along with a quartet of ground balls.

Sophomore Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.) made it well known that he was going to excel in his two jobs on the day, winning faceoffs and scooping up grounders, as he picked up six GBs off the turf and claimed nine of his 13 faceoff attempts (69.2%).

Sophomore Austin Demo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went on defensive mode, causing a game-most three turnovers, while junior Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) had a quality overall outing, grabbing five ground balls on top of four points via three assists and a score.

In goal, senior Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) started the game and made two saves in the first half. In the second, freshman Tucker Swinerton (Weston, Fla.) finished the game off with one save of his own.

The men from Kings Point hit the highway for its next matchup, a 4 p.m. start in Danbury, Conn., this Wednesday, March 1, when they invade the Wolves' Den of Western Connecticut State.
