Baseball Blanks Wells Twice In Season-Opening Doubleheader Sweep, As Notebaert Wins 250th Career Game

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team opened the 2023 season by tossing a pair of shutouts to sweep a doubleheader against Wells at Bartoszek Field. The Mariners (2-0) walked off with a 1-0 win in game one before a three-run first set the tone for a 7-0 triumph in the second game against the Express (1-2). The game two victory gave USMMA head coach Michael Notebaert his 250th career-win.

Junior Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Mariners. Register (1-0) struck out four, while surrendering four hits and one walk. Classmate Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) finished 2-for-3 and hit the fly ball with two outs in the seventh that was dropped, allowing the game-winning run to score.

With the help of a pickoff in the first and a double play in the second, Register faced the minimum through four innings. The game was still scoreless through six when the Express loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh only to have Register close the door with an inning-ending fielder's choice. In the bottom of the frame, USMMA loaded the bases with one out on a hit batsman, an intentional walk and a walk. Reistetter then lifted a fly ball to right field that was dropped, allowing sophomore Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) to score from third and giving the Mariners a 1-0 win in walk-off fashion.

Game 2
Reistetter (1-0) racked up eight strikeouts in 4.0 shutout frames for the win in game two, while also going 1-for-1 with a double and two RBI at the plate. Senior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) finished 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored, while sophomore Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI triple, two walks and two runs. Freshman Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Wells looked to take a quick lead in the top of the first as the Express loaded the bases with no outs, but Reistetter struck out the next two batters before a flyout ended the threat. The Mariners, meanwhile, needed just two batters to take the lead for good in the bottom of the first. After Zanetti led off with a triple to the wall in right center, Millen made it 1-0 with a triple to right. Senior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) followed with an RBI double before Darling later made it 3-0 with a two-out RBI single.

Zanetti set the table again in the second with a two-out double before later scoring on a passed ball for a 4-0 lead. Freshman Quin Fitzgerald (Jupiter, Fla.) made it 5-0 with an RBI groundout in the third and a Reistetter sacrifice fly in the fourth put USMMA up 6-0. Reistetter added an RBI double in the sixth for the final 7-0 margin.

The USMMA baseball team is back in action at Bartoszek Field on Sunday, Feb. 26, for a noon doubleheader against Sage. Live stats and a live video feed of the games will be available on USMMASports.com with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
