Garrison earned the #1 seed in the 285-pound bracket and defeated his first opponent from Muhlenberg via a pin, setting up a first-place bout with the #3 seed Jake Sherman, a senior from Ursinus. Garrison pitched a shutout with a 9-0 major decision in the championship match.
Â
Three other Mariners reached the first-place bouts in their respective brackets, but fell just short of championships, settling for second place – sophomores
Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) at 141,
Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) at 149 and
Cade Cowley (Boulder City, Nev.) at 184. Lausten and Pinc were both seeded second in their brackets, but Cowley was the #4 seed and earned an upset over the bracket's top seed, Ursinus senior Gary Nagle, in the semifinals via a first period pin.
Â
Sophomore
Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 157 and freshman
Ivan Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) at 165 both placed third in their respective brackets.
Â
The Mariners are back in action the last weekend of February when they travel up to Portland, Maine, to take part in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Southern Maine on Feb. 25-26. They will look to send wrestlers through to nationals with third-place finish or better in their brackets at regionals. More info on the Regional Championships will be posted on
the USMMA Wrestling Schedule Page closer to the event.
