KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2023) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team hosted the three-round Metro Duals late Saturday afternoon inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners lost their first match of the day to #17 NYU, 35-14, but bounced back for a big 54-6 victory over Hunter in the final round.

Against the Violets, who boast six nationally ranked wrestlers, the Mariners got victories at 149 by junior Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) via a tech fall, at 197 by freshman Grant Mathias (Rockwood, Pa.) by way of a fall and then a huge win by junior Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) in a heavyweight match that featured two nationally ranked wresters.
 
#15 Garrison defeated #14 Evan Anderson of NYU via a close 4-3 decision, thanks in large part to a late takedown in the third period.
 
In the neutral-site match during the second round, NYU defeated Hunter, 56-0.
 
USMMA picked up where the Violets left off against the Hawks, as they produced first-period pins in all six bouts that were contested. Sophomore Corey Haney (Medina, Ohio) kicked off the streak at 133, followed by Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) at 141, Pinc at 149, freshman Calvin Brown (Savannah, Ga.) at 174, junior Eric DeWald (Marshall, Va.) at 184 and Garrison at 285.
 
Earning forfeit wins and six more team points apiece against Hunter were junior Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 157, sophomore Ivan Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) at 165 and Mathias at 197.
 
The Mariners are back in action in 2024 at Ursinus' Manganaro Duals. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m. on the campus of Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. Any live links for the duals will be posted on the USMMA Wrestling Schedule Page before the event begins.
