Eddie Pinc Wins 149 Bracket At 2023 Ned McGinley Invite

Pinc Wins 149-Pound Bracket, Mariners Place Fifth At Season-Opening Ned McGinley Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Nov. 4, 2023) – Junior Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio)'s conquest of the 149-pound bracket helped lead the USMMA wrestling team to a fifth-place team finish at King's College's Ned McGinley Invitational on Saturday. Pinc was one of five Mariners who reached the podium at the event, as he went a perfect 5-0 record with two falls and a major decision to win his bracket.

Important Links The impressive fifth-place team finish was the result of Merchant Marine compiling a team score of 113.5. At this event last year, the Mariners finished in eighth place, and there were also two less teams in 2022, so the 2023-24 version of Kings Point Wrestling has already shown massive improvement.

NYU won the event with 134.5 points, followed by RIT in second (132), Stevens in third (122) and Wilkes in fourth (120.5).

Junior Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) battled through the heavyweight bracket all the way to the first place bout, but he fell to Wilkes' Caleb Burkhart to settle for second place. Garrison went 3-1 on the day with one pin and a technical fall.

Also placing for the Mariners were freshmen Colin Dragon (Richmond Hill, Ga.) at 125 and Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) at 184, who both came in third/fourth due to no contests in the third place bouts due to either they or their opponents reaching their maximum number of allowed bouts on the day and, as well as sophomore Corey Haney (Medina, Ohio), who came in fifth in 133.

Dragon's record on the day was 4-1 with two falls and two major decisions, while Withers was 5-1 with all five of his wins coming via pins and Haney went 4-2 with one fall and two majors.

For Merchant Marine, 19 of the 20 wrestlers who competed throughout the day earned at least one victory, as the following plebes all earned their first collegiate wins in addition to Dragon and Withers:
  • Calvin Burton (Huntsville, Ala.) at 125 via a pin
  • Matthew Trinidad (Mesa, Ariz.) at 149 with two wins, including a major decision
  • Jacob Brockey (Syosset, N.Y.) at 157 with three victories on a tech. fall and two majors
  • Matthew Ferrucci (Killingworth, Conn.) at 165 with two wins, one by fall
  • Grant Mathias (Rockwood, Pa.) at 197 with two victories, one pin and one MD
  • And Hugo Frazier Jr. (Huntingtown, Md.) with a win by way of a medical forfeit.
Up next for the Mariners is a trip up to Springfield College two weeks from today for the Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 18. Any live links to follow along will be posted on the USMMA Wrestling Schedule Page prior to the event beginning.
