Men’s Soccer Ties Maritime, 2-2

BRONX, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2023) – The USMMA men's soccer team battled Skyline-rival SUNY Maritime to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. The Mariners' record goes to 4-4-7 (3-0-5 Skyline), as they extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games, while Maritime moves to 3-7-3 (0-6-2 Skyline).
 
Game Link A hand ball in the box gave Maritime a penalty kick in the 11th minute. Senior Jack Burkhardt stepped up to the spot and buried the PK into the lower left corner, putting the Privateers in front.
 
Early in the second half, the Mariners found the equalizer when sophomore Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) slipped a half-volley past SUNY's sophomore keeper Augusto Lebron.
 
The Privateers countered in the 61st minute. After a USMMA foul set up a free kick, the hosts had three attempts blocked, including a defensive save, but a shot by Maritime sophomore Justin Song ricocheted off a teammate and went right to freshman Christopher Laino, who buried the rebound.
 
It remained 2-1 until the 77th minute, when the Mariners again tied the score. Freshman Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) sent a low cross into the box that found the foot of senior Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas). Millan snuck it by Lebron to make it a 2-2 game, which is how the contest would end.
 
Merchant Marine outshot Maritime 23-12, including 15-6 in the second half, with Lebron making five saves. USMMA senior keeper Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) was credited with three saves for the Mariners, while Merchant Marine also had a team save.
 
A mid-week showdown with St. Joseph's-Long Island is up next for the Mariners on Tuesday, Oct. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. down at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
