Mariners Shut Out St. Joe’s-L.I. At Home, 3-0, To Ride Unbeaten Streak To 11 Games

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2023) – Senior Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) made four saves to record his fifth shutout of the season (third solo shutout), as the USMMA men's soccer team defeated visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island, 3-0, in the home regular-season finale at Bartoszek Field on Tuesday night. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 5-4-7 (4-0-5 Skyline), as they are now unbeaten in 11-straight games dating back to Sept. 13, while the Golden Eagles fall to 7-6-1 (4-4-1 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Game Link Junior Jason Healey (King George, Va.) opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he cleaned up a loose ball in front after it bounced around a lot off of a throw-in by junior Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.). It was Healey's fourth tally of the season, which pulls him into a tie for first on the squad.
 
Just 21 seconds into the second half Vanasse doubled the Merchant Marine lead when he corralled a pass from freshman Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) at the center of the box and fired it quick and low off the near-side post and into the net for his third of the season.  Sophomore Jack Ouellette (Alexandria, Va.) also picked up an assist on the marker.
 
Sophomore Billy Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the 60th minute with a perfect header off of a corner kick by senior Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas). It was Castoro's second goal of the season and Millan's team-leading fourth assist. Millan now has points in three-consecutive games.
 
Carey made four stops to preserve the clean sheet, while his counterpart for St. Joe's, junior Giuseppe Vitale, had five stops over the 90 minutes.
 
The Mariners travel up to Westchester County this weekend to take on Purchase College on Saturday, Oct. 21, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
