Two Quick Goals Late Lift Mariners Past Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2023) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team scored two quick goals in the 77th and 78th minutes to defeat Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 2-0, on Wednesday night up at the Knights' Kaplan Field. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 4-4-6 (3-0-4 Skyline), while MSMC falls to 1-9-2 (1-4-2 Skyline) after suffering the loss.
 
Game Link Senior Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas) had his hand (err, foot) in both of the Mariners' tallies on the night, as he scored the first on a sliding shot after the ball was crossed into the box by sophomore Jack Ouellette (Alexandria, Va.), and then just over a minute later set up junior Derek Vanasse's (Camarillo, Calif.) second goal of the season with a cross from the right side that found Vanasse six yards out.
 
The Mariner defense was strong to preserve the blank sheet, led by senior keeper Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) who was sensational in net for USMMA, as he turned aside six shots on goal by the Knights over the 90 minutes to pick up the victory. His counterpart for Mount St. Mary, junior Caesar Martinez, finished the night with seven stops.
 
Merchant Marine held the advantage in shots, 15-9, including 9-6 in shots on goal. The Mariners also finished with five corner kicks to MSMC's two.
 
Up next, the Mariners will travel to face rival SUNY Maritime this coming Sunday, Oct. 15, in a game that is slated to begin at 12-noon at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
