Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Moves To 17-2 With 77-63 Road Win At St. Joe’s-Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2023) – A pair of players had 20-plus point performances and another nearly had a triple-double, as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team pulled away early in the fourth quarter to defeat Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's-Long Island on Saturday at the Bears' Hill Center Gym. The victory improved the Mariners' record to 17-2 (12-2 Skyline), while the Bears fell to 9-8 (7-6 Skyline) in defeat.

Game Link Senior Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) tied for the game-high with 27 points, while also pulling down 17 rebounds to lead all players. Sophomore Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) drained 20 points and contributed all-around with seven boards, six rebounds and three steals, while classmate Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) nearly had a triple-double, scoring 10 points, dishing out a career-high 11 assists and bringing down nine rebounds.

The game was extremely close throughout, and it was just a two-point game in the early parts of the fourth quarter when the Mariners started to pull away. They built their advantage up to eight points after an 8-2 run made it 62-54 at 6:15 and then just over four minutes later the lead hit double-digits, where it lingered around in the final minutes.

For the Bears, junior Destiny Hurt tied Hunter with a game-high 27 points and two other players scored in double figures, as sophomore Grace Kennedy and freshman Aaniya Telford both drained 15 points apiece. Hurt recorded a double-double with a team-best 10 rebounds

The Mariners are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 31, when they close out the month with a home game against St. Joseph's-Long Island. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
