Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense Leads Women’s Basketball Past St. Joseph’s-Long Island, 72-42

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2023) – Led by a strong defensive effort that forced a season-high 28 turnovers and allowed zero second chance points, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to eight games with a 72-42 win against St. Joseph's-Long Island. USMMA improved to 18-2 (13-2 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles dropped to 10-7 (8-4 Skyline).

Game Links Senior Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) finished with a game-high 25 points and a game-high 20 rebounds to notch her sixth-straight double-double and 15th of the season. Sophomore Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) had 13 points, six rebounds and six steals, while classmate Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) added 13 points and six assists. The Mariners shot 42.7 percent (32-of-75) from the floor and posted a +24 margin (50-26) on the glass. USMMA turned 28 Golden Eagle turnovers into 40 points, and also posted significant advantages in both second chance points (23-0) and points in the paint (44-12).

Alyssa Adomaites led St. Joseph's-Long Island with 12 points, while Lanyah Ford added 10. After making 7-of-11 field goals in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles made just 1-of-11 baskets in the second quarter and finished the game shooting 34.8 percent (16-of-46) from the field.

The Golden Eagles led early as Adomaites made a pair of 3-pointers to help the visitors open a 14-5 lead, their largest of the game, at the 4:33 mark. USMMA responded as Hunter scored four points as part of a quick 6-0 run that eventually became a 12-2 rally that put the Mariners up, 17-16, after one quarter.

USMMA took control of the game with 15 unanswered points to open the second quarter. Jackson had seven points as part of the game-changing rally, including a jumper at 4:24 that gave the Mariners a 32-16 lead. The Golden Eagles twice pulled to within 12, but USMMA took a 38-22 lead into the break.

Another eight unanswered points to open the third quarter quickly made it a 46-22 ballgame at the 7:41 mark. After an Adomaites bucket ended the scoreless stretch for the Golden Eagles, a Hunter bucket-and-one opened up another 8-0 run that gave the Mariners a 54-24 advantage. USMMA outscored the Golden Eagles by a 25-8 margin in the third and took a 63-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

Junior Bryanne Buchanan-Cummings (Dacula, Ga.) opened the scoring in the fourth with a jumper that gave the Mariners their largest lead of the game, 65-30, at the 9:33 mark. A Julianna Knice 3-pointer at 7:03 capped an 8-2 run that brought the Golden Eagles within 29 points, but that would be as close as they would come the rest of the way.

The Mariners return to action on Feb. 4 with a noon game against Mount Saint Mary at Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
