NEWARK, N.J. (Sept. 8, 2022) – On Thursday night, the USMMA women's volleyball team traveled to the site of their final match of the 2021 season – the Golden Dome at Rutgers University-Newark – and defeated the host Scarlet Raiders, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-18), to earn its second win in a row to start the season. A pair of seniors led the way for the Mariners (2-0), including a double-double effort by senior
Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.).

Hyun dished out a match-high 25 assists, while also picking up a team-best 11 digs. Fellow senior
Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) just missed out on a double-double, as she led all players on the night with 14 kills and recorded nine digs. Junior
Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas) contributed eight kills in the match, while classmate middle
Amy Jones (Roscoe, Ill.) put down a match-high three blocks.
For the Scarlet Raiders (0-2), junior Alexa Rivera had a team-best eight kills to go along with nine digs. Freshman Jackie Rosario registered 13 assists and junior libero Saniyiah Richardson had the most digs of any player on the evening with 14.
Up next, Merchant Marine will travel up to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., this Saturday, Sept. 10, to take part in a tri-match at Vassar College. The Mariners will take on the host Brewers at 11 a.m. before squaring off against Muhlenberg at 1 p.m. Live links for both matches will be available with links on
