JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Sept. 11, 2022) – Earlier on Sunday, the USMMA women's soccer team won the program's first ever road game, as the Mariners defeated New Jersey City University, 3-2, at Cochrane Stadium at Caven Point. For the first time in program history, USMMA played while behind, as it was NJCU that tallied the first goal of the game in the 15th minute.
Â
However, back-to-back markers in the 38th and 39th minutes, the first by freshman
Morgan Mitchell (Amory, Miss.) and the second by senior
Cassidy Jester (Denton, Texas), assisted by Mitchell, put the Mariners ahead, 2-1.
Â
Mitchell buried her second goal of the game and team-leading seventh of the season in the 73rd minute to put the Mariners ahead, 3-1.
Â
The Gothic Knights would not go quietly, however, as the hosts pulled back within one goal in the 82nd minute. NJCU was only able to muster one more shot the final eight minutes, and it sailed high.
Â
Sophomore keeper
Margaret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) made the first five saves of her career in the victory, while her counterpart, freshman Lorraine Valenzuela for the Gothic Knights, finished the day with two stops.
Â
Up next, the Mariners will host non-conference opponent Lehman College this Wednesday night, Sept. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the contest will be available with links on
the USMMA Women's Soccer Schedule Page.
