KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team won its 2022 season-opener on Thursday night, 1-0, over visiting Five Towns College at the pitch on Bartoszek Field.
Game File
It was a scoreless first half, with the Mariners (1-0) out-shooting the Sound, 8-0, including one that was on goal, but turned away by the FTC keeper.
Just over five minutes into the second half, sophomore
Wesley Cooke (Mobile, Ala.) scored what stood as the game-winner for the Mariners. The ball was chased down in the far side corner by freshman
Drew Boukidis (Matthews, N.C.), who dribbled towards the net, keeping the defender close, before passing it back to Cooke who one-timed it low into the near side corner of the net.
Five Towns (1-1) was far from the same team that lost to the Mariners 7-1 at the beginning of the 2021 season. The Sound kept the game very interesting, especially in the second half, as they fired off six shots to match the Mariners' output. Three of those chances were on net, but were all turned away by senior
Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho).
Miller had come in at the beginning of the second half to replace junior
Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.), who played a clean opening half. Together, the two backstops combined for the shutout victory.
The Mariners are back at it on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they host nationally-ranked NYU at 12-noon at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the contest will be available with links available on
