Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | by George Whitbread

Men’s Soccer Earns Impressive 0-0 Tie With NYU On Saturday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2022) – The USMMA men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the Violets of New York University on Saturday afternoon at Bartoszek Field. Thanks to the tie, both teams now have a record of 1-0-1 through two games. In a game that featured numerous high-quality chances for the Violets, senior goalkeeper Chase Miller (Boise, Id.) made six saves to keep the game scoreless.

Game File Perhaps the game's best scoring chance came at the 8:26 mark of the first half. Miller stretched out his left foot on a point-blank chance to rob NYU's Arkan Tahsildaroghu. USMMA's defense picked up their keeper by allowing only one shot on goal the rest of the first half.

As the game moved to half number two, defense on both sides remained air tight. Every inch of the field was contested. When it mattered most, the Mariners' defensive unit came up huge in their own end. Eye-opening slides tackles from senior Hudson Magee (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and impressive exit passes from graduate student Denton Henry (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) kept the Violets at bay all afternoon long. Miller referred to Henry as a reliable "speed demon" to have as a security blanket in front of the cage.

Merchant Marine's lockdown defense nearly turned to offense as the Mariners' transition game and speed were put on display. Junior Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Tx.) used his speed on the wing to open up the field, which is a concept head coach Drew McCarthy stressed the importance of before the game.

Shots for the game were 12-8 in favor of the Violets and NYU also led in shots on goal 6-1.

What is most important about USMMA's tie is the growth it will allow on the club. NYU has recently received votes for the Top 25, and showed why this afternoon despite being shut out. For a Mariners team that has 11 freshman on the roster, a 0-0 tie against a team as highly regarded as the Violets is a huge stepping stone for the program.

The Mariners look to keep their strong defensive play going Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 7. USMMA is set to take the pitch at 5 p.m. when they take on SUNY New Paltz at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the contest will be available with links available on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
