Herdman’s Walk-Off Single Moves Mariners On To Championship Sunday

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (May 14, 2022) – Senior Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) came up with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning in the Mariners' second game of the Skyline double-elimination tournament on Saturday against Farmingdale State and he roped the first pitch into left-center to plate classmate Brayden O'Connell (Beaver Dams, N.Y.) with the winning run in the USMMA baseball team's 4-3 win over the Rams out at St. Joseph's-L.I.'s Alfano Field.

The win propels the Mariners (26-17) on to Skyline Championship Sunday for the second-straight season, while FSC (22-14) is playing the host and top-seed St. Joe's in an elimination game on Saturday evening.

Game Links Sophomore starter Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) pitched all 10 innings for Merchant Marine and earned the victory on the mound. He allowed just two earned runs on eight hits and struck out 11 batters.

The Rams got on the board first in the top of the second, but the Mariners answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) that plated sophomore Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.), followed by an RBI-single by freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) the scored O'Connell to put USMMA ahead.

They added a run in the fifth after taking advantage of an error by the Rams to make it 3-1.

However, Farmingdale came back to knot it up with a run in the seventh and then a game-tying RBI-single with two outs in the ninth. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, the game went to extras.

In the 10th, Reistetter worked around a two-out walk to induce an inning-ending foul-out that set the stage for the theatrics in the bottom of the 10th.

O'Connell led off the frame with a walk and then stole second base. Zanetti was intentionally walked to bring up Herdman. The senior roped the first pitch, a breaking ball that hung high in the zone into left-center to plat O'Connell and send the Mariners Sunday's Championship Round!

The Mariners will find out who they are playing after action ends tonight out in Patchogue between Farmingdale State and St. Joseph's-L.I. Whichever team comes out of that game will have to win twice on Sunday, while the Mariners only need one more victory to claim the Skyline Championship. Live stats and live video feeds for all games this weekend will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
