Mariners’ Season Ends On Skyline Championship Sunday

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (May 15, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost a pair of games to the #1-seed in the Skyline Tournament St. Joseph's-Long Island on Championship Sunday to close out the 2022 campaign. The Mariners posted an impressive 26-19 record overall on the season. It was their third 20-win season in the past five years (with two seasons heavily affected by Covid).

Game Links The Golden Eagles needed to win both games to capture the title and started off on the right foot, taking Sunday's first game by a final of 18-9. Freshman Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) had the highlight on offense for the Mariners with his first career home run, a two-run shot in the sixth inning.

Junior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) also brought two runs in in the opener, however USMMA couldn't overcome the big hole that SJU put them in, as the hosts cruised to the win to set up a winner-take-all second game.

In the second game, the Mariners got on the board first in the bottom of the opening inning after RBI-singles by senior Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) and freshman Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.). The Golden Eagles would go on to score the next nine runs, though, hanging runs in every inning from the second to the seventh.

The Mariners got one back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-single by junior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas), but that was the last run they could push across. St. Joe's would go on to win the Skyline title with a 10-3 victory.
