Baseball Splits Skyline Doubleheader At SUNY Maritime

BRONX, N.Y. (April 10, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team split its Sunday afternoon doubleheader against Skyline Conference-rival SUNY Maritime on Sunday at the Privateers' Reinhart Baseball Field. Merchant Marine took Game 1 by the score of 2-1 in 12 innings, while the Privateers responded by winning 3-2 in Game 2. Thanks to the split, the Mariners left the Bronx with a 14-13 overall record (7-3 Skyline) and Maritime ended the day with a 17-7 record (9-3 Skyline).

Game Links Game 1 featured a pitchers' duel between sophomore Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Shane Sullivan. The two right-handers tossed a combined 18.2 innings only allowing one earned run.

Maritime drew first blood in the third on a Freddy Forgione RBI-groundout to take a 1-0 lead. That one run appeared to be enough for Sullivan, until the Mariners mustered a seventh-inning rally against the Privateers' graduate student hurler.

An error by Forgione at third base allowed freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) to reach and opened the door for USMMA in the seventh. Down to their final out, a single from fellow freshman Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) moved Millen to third and set the table for sophomore Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo).

Garner doubled down the left field line to plate Millen with the tying run. Sullivan limited the damage to one run, and off to extra innings the two rivals went.

Register, who finished with 8.2 IP, went toe-to-toe with Sullivan, who tossed 10 innings of his own, to keep the game tied 1-1 deep into extras. With Sullivan out of the game, the Mariners went to work against the Privateers' bullpen in the top of the 12th.

Clapsaddle again came up in a big spot, this time with runners on second and third with one out. The freshman pushed a beautiful bunt base hit up the first base line to plate junior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) with the go-ahead run.

Up 2-1, junior Andrew Dreyfuss, (Naples, Fla), who came on for his second inning of relief, worked around a walk and a single to close out the largest win of the season for Coach Mike Notebaert's club.

Dreyfuss took home the win and improved to 1-0 on the season, while Eric Wenig suffered the loss for Maritime to fall to 0-1. The victory was the Mariners' first of the season when trailing in their final turn at-bat.

Game 2 was nearly a carbon copy of Game 1 in that quality pitching was the story. Freshman Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla) squared off against fellow freshman Frank Santeramo in the seven-inning portion of the twin bill. Both bullpens ended up getting the game off as the two freshmen hurlers each tossed complete games.

USMMA jumped in front early on the strength of an RBI-single from senior Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) and a run-scoring double play grounder from freshman Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.).

Maritime managed to scratch out the next and final three of the game versus Syversen. Runs in the first, third and fifth innings put the Privateers on top for good, 3-2.

Santeramo earned the complete-game victory to move to 5-0 on the season, while Syversen fell to 3-3 in defeat.

In a tightly contested doubleheader that saw only eight combined runs score in 18.5 innings, the Mariners managed to remain only one game behind the Privateers for second place in the conference standings.

USMMA will look to get back in the win column 72 hours from now. The Mariners will be back in action on Wednesday, April 13, at Bartoszek Field when they host the John Jay College Bloodhounds at 5 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
