Seven Different Pitchers Combine For Baseball’s Home Shutout Victory Over John Jay

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 13, 2022) – The USMMA baseball team got a stellar performance from its pitching staff in the Mariners' 7-0 home win over John Jay College on Wednesday. Speaking of seven, it was seven different pitchers who tossed the combined shutout against the Bloodhounds.

Merchant Marine with the win improved to 15-13 overall, while John Jay dropped to 4-22 in defeat. Pitching coach Lou Bernardi's staff tossed its third shutout of the season in dominant fashion to move the Mariners to a season-high two games over .500.

Senior Grant Corb (Katy, Texas), classmate Billy Todd (Gastonia, N.C.), freshman Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Md.), classmate Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.), junior Chris Klayer (Brownsburg, Ind.), senior Jared Johnson (Warrenton, Va.) and sophomore Tommy Payton (Palm Harbor, Fla.) combined to hang nine zeros on the scoreboard, while striking out 12 John Jay batters.

In what was his first career start, Corb earned the win to improve to 1-3 on the season, while sophomore Christopher LoFroncesca took the loss to fall to 0-1. Corb dazzled on the hill with three shutout innings that encompassed four strikeouts and only one hit allowed. A true feel-good moment for the senior who has already set a career-high with nine appearances this season.

The Mariners' offense supplied more than adequate run support for their hurlers. A trio of RBI singles from sophomore Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas), freshman Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) and senior Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) put the Mariners in the fast lane in the first three innings. Junior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) added a sacrifice fly in Merchant Marine's two-run third inning to increase the lead to 4-0.

In a game of solid pitching, no runs were scored again until the Mariners tacked on three in the eighth inning. RBIs from freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.), junior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) made it 6-0 Mariners. Herdman kicked the extra point with an RBI bases-loaded walk to put Merchant Marine up seven.

With his two ribeye steaks today, Herdman now has 36 for the season and reclaimed his Skyline Conference RBI leader title from Mount Saint Vincent's Jake Blinstrub. The third baseman has simply been a man on a mission at the plate this season hitting at a .358 clip. It has been quite a hot streak for Herdman, who has a hit in 14 of his last 16 games and is batting .424 in that span.

Skyline Conference action returns to Bartoszek Field on Saturday afternoon, April 16, as the Mariners host conference foe Purchase College in a doubleheader set to begin at high noon. Live stats and a live video feed of the doubleheader will be available on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
