NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 30, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-7 road loss at arch-rival Coast Guard on Wednesday night at the Bears' Cadet Memorial Field. The setback dropped the Mariners' record to 3-2, while USCGA improved to 5-3.

Game Link Senior Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) tied for the game-high with six points on four goals and two assists, while junior Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had a three-point night, finding the back of the net twice and dishing out one assist. USMMA also got a goal from sophomore Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) and an assist from junior Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.).

Senior Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) secured a team-best six draw controls, with Sheedy grabbing four, and junior Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) led the Mariners with four groundballs and three caused turnovers. In goal, junior Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made 10 saves over the 60 minutes.

The Bears scored the first five goals of the game, but past the midway point of the second quarter the Mariners finished the half with three out of the next four goals to go into the halftime break down 6-3.

After Coast Guard opened the third quarter with a tally, Merchant Marine responded with three-straight that brought them within just one, 7-6, at 5:12. However, the hosts scored the next five goals over the next 13 minutes of action to pull away for the victory.

For the Bears, sophomore Addy Bass and freshman Caitlyn Coates both had six points apiece – Bass on six goals and Coates on three goals and three assists. Freshman Kira Howard led all players with seven draw controls, Bass had a game-high four caused turnovers and junior Brenda Anderson scooped up a game-best seven groundballs. Sophomore goalie Devon McCue made 10 saves to earn the win.
