Mariners Earn 18-8 Home Win Over Salve Regina In Final Non-Conference Game Of The Season

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 2, 2022) – Head Coach Kyle Simensky could not be happier about the way that the USMMA women's lacrosse team finished its non-conference schedule, as the Mariners defeated visiting Salve Regina University, 18-8, on Saturday at Brooks Stadium. With the win, Merchant Marine improves to 4-2 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to the same 4-2 record with their setback.

Game Links Senior Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) tied the program-record for points in a game with 12 on six goals and six assists. Junior Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) added five goals as well as a game-high seven groundballs, while classmate Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) recorded four points (three goals and one assist) to go along with three GBs and six draw controls, which matched senior Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) for most on the afternoon.

Schmidt was a menace defensively, as she caused five turnovers over the 60 minutes, and junior goalie Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made eight saves to collect her fourth win of the season. USMMA also got a two-point game from junior Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) with one goal and one helper and classmate Phoebe Cho (Fairfax, Va.) found the back of the net once to round out the Mariners' scorers.

The game was close over the first half, with Merchant Marine holding a 3-2 lead after one quarter and then an 8-5 advantage at halftime. The Mariners started to win the battle of the draw controls in the third and it showed, as they cashed in on their extra possessions to the tune of a 6-2 showing in the frame to lead 14-7 after 45 minutes. They added four more in the fourth and finished the final minutes of the game with a 10-goal running-clock situation.

For the Seahawks, senior Nicole Smith had a team-high four points on two goals and two assists, while freshman Samantha Moleti added a hat-trick. Junior Kelly Ventura tied Sheedy and Schmidt with a game-high six draw controls, and Smith led the way defensively with two caused turnovers.

The Mariners will hit the road for two-straight games, starting with a Skyline-opening showdown with Manhattanville College on Tuesday night, April 5, beginning at 5 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field in Purchase, N.Y. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
