10-Run Fourth Inning Propels Mariners To 19-9 Home Win Over Bard On Wednesday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 30, 2022) – On Wednesday, the USMMA baseball team earned a 19-9 home win over Bard College on a long and chilly night at Bartoszek Field thanks in large part to a 10-run fourth inning that broke the game open. The win improved the Mariners' record to 8-11, while the Raptors fell to 6-8.

Game Links After the teams traded runs in the first three innings, the Mariners batted around in the fourth and scored 10 runs on Bard relievers to open up a 14-5 advantage. Sophomore Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) knotted the game at 5-all with a one-out single to plate freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.), who led off with a double.

Senior Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) put the Mariners ahead for the first time in the contest with a two-run homer to left field in the next at-bat. Classmate Matthew Novakowski (Hillsdale, N.J.) added a two-run double to push the edge to 10-5, before junior Joey Zanetti's (Richmond, Va.) two-out double down the third-base line plated Millen with his second run of the inning. Reistetter also scored twice in the fourth, coming home two batters later on a throwing error in the infield.

Merchant Marine used seven different pitchers over the 3.5-hour game. Sophomore Blake Jennings (Snellville, Ga.) earned the win after tossing the third and fourth innings with three strikeouts before the Mariners' explosive go-ahead frame. Freshman Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) and sophomore Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) fired scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively.

Up next, the Mariners host Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn this Sunday, April 3, for a doubleheader (7-inning/9-inning) beginning at 12-noon at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the games will be available on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
