Mariners Sweep St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn On A Wet Sunday At The Ray

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 3, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team won both games of its Skyline Conference doubleheader over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon, 8-4 and 13-3 in eight innings. The victories were the Mariners' fourth- and fifth-straight, as they move to within one game of .500 at 10-11 (4-2 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 3-13 (1-5 Skyline) with the losses.

  • The Bears scored the first three runs of the game in the top of the first, though none of them were earned against sophomore starter Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas).
  • USMMA got those runs back and more, as the Mariners plated five runs in the bottom of the second and added one more in the third, the fifth and the sixth to secure their third Skyline win of the season.
  • Freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) was a team-best 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. It was his three-run double in the second that gave Merchant Marine its lead.
  • Classmate Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) was 1-for-2 with a two-run single that opened the scoring for the Mariners in the second.
  • Fellow Plebe Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) scored a team-best three runs after going 2-for-4 at the plate and stealing three bases.
  • Seniors Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) and Brayden O'Connell (Beaver Dams, N.Y.) also knocked in runs for the Mariners.
  • Reistetter earned the win on the bump, hurling the complete game with 10 strikeouts over the seven innings, giving up just one earned run in the outing.

  • The Mariners used big fourth and eighth innings to win by mercy rule in the nightcap.
  • Millen went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored to finish 7-for-9 on the day.
  • Herdman was 3-for-4 and knocked in a team-best four runs, while senior Matthew Novakowski (Hillsdale, N.J.) also had a multi-RBI game as he was responsible for bringing in two runs.
  • O'Connell, Vanasse and junior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) all had one RBI apiece.
  • Millen, O'Connell, Reistetter and junior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) all scored twice in the affair.
  • On the mound, freshman Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) earned the victory after tossing five innings of three-run ball with just six hits allowed. Sophomore Tommy Payton (Palm Harbor, Fla.) hurled two innings in relief giving up just one hit and striking out two, while junior Andrew Dreyfuss (Naples, Fla.) pitched the top of the eighth and also had one hit against with two Ks.
 
The Mariners are right back at it on Monday, April 4, when they host non-conference opponent Saint Elizabeth for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the games will be available on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
