WEST HARRISON, N.J. (March 27, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Maine Academy baseball team picked up its first two Skyline Conference wins on Sunday with routs of Yeshiva University in a doubleheader at Silver Lake Park. The Mariners won the opener, 22-1, and took the second game by the final of 20-0. With the victories, USMMA moves to 7-11 (2-2 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 2-13 (0-8 Skyline) in defeat.

Game 1 Highlights
- The Mariners scored 16 runs in the first inning to put the game well out of reach.
- Junior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) went a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles and a team-high five runs batted in, while also scoring twice and stealing two bases.
- Sophomore Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) knocked in three runs and three other Mariners had two RBIs each - junior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas), freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) and senior Matthew Novakowski (Hillsdale, N.J.).
- Novakowski and freshman Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) both finished the day going 3-for-4 with three runs scored apiece, as Leatherwood hit an inside the park homer in the second inning. (It was his third home run of the season.)
- Merchant Marine recorded six stolen bases in the game.
- Sophomore Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned the victory after tossing four innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts.
- Out of the bullpen, classmate Grant Gould (Coronado, Calif.) tossed two scoreless innings with just one hit allowed and senior Grant Corb (Katy, Texas) got the final three outs and struck out one.Â
Game 2 Highlights
- The Mariners won by the Skyline mercy rule of 10+ runs in seven innings. They scored 10 runs in two innings
- Novakowski led the way with four RBIs after going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. He also scored twice.
- Millen and freshman Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) both plated three runs each, while Chambers and seniors Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) and Garrett Aichele (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) all registered two RBIs apiece. Chambers also scored a game-high four runs.
- There were seven stolen bases by USMMA in this contest, with Zanetti and Millen both swiping two bases.
- Freshman Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Md.) earned his second win of the week after tossing five shutout innings with five hits allowed and two Ks. Both senior Billy Todd (Gastonia, N.C.) and junior Andrew Dreyfuss (Naples, Fla.) fired 1-2-3 innings – Todd with one strikeout and Dreyfuss fanning the side in the seventh.Â
