FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 13, 2022) – The USMMA baseball team traveled down to Florida to get their first taste of the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday afternoon, but the Mariners began their stretch of six games in seven days by falling to the Otterbein Cardinals, 7-2.
Â
Game File
Â
Merchant Marine dropped to 2-5 in defeat, while Otterbein improved to 7-4. In what was a pitchers' duel for the first three innings between the Cardinals' Logan Weber and sophomore
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas), the Mariners drew first blood in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI double by freshman
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) that plated senior
Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.).
Â
Otterbein answered back quickly in the top of the fifth with three runs off Reistetter, who suffered his first loss of the season. Merchant Marine got a run back in their half of the fifth inning as senior
Garrett Aichele (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) scampered home on a wild pitch to cut the Cardinals' lead in half, but that was the last run the Mariners could get across on the afternoon.
Â
Junior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) was locked in at the plate all game for the Mariners, as he went 3-for-4 with a walk from the leadoff spot. Leatherwood joined Zanetti in picking up a multi-hit game for the Mariners by going 2-for-4 with his aforementioned run-scoring double. Merchant Marine's offense tallied a total of 11 hits.
Â
On the mound, senior
Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) made his first appearance of the season in relief of Reistetter. Heck hurled three innings of two-hit ball and more importantly saved the bullpen for the busy week of baseball ahead for the Mariners.
Â
Merchant Marine is right back at it tomorrow as the Mariners will rise and shine at 9 a.m. to take on the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights at the Player Development Complex Field #5. Any live links for the game will be posted on
