Game Highlights
  • After falling behind 3-0 through one, USMMA hung four runs in the top of the second.
  • The Mariners held that lead until SMC tied it up at 4-4 in the fourth.
  • Freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) broke the tie in the top of the sixth with an inside-the-park home run to right-center, one of five extra-base hits Merchant Marine had on the day. (Millen went 2-for-5 with a steal.)
  • The Mariners added one more in the sixth on a triple by sophomore Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) and then another on a dropped fly ball in the seventh that made it 7-4.
  • Reistetter finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBIs.
  • The Purple Knights loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, but they were only able to get one run across on an RBI-groundout before junior Chris Klayer (Brownsburg, Ind.) worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a lineout.
  • Freshman Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) smacked a double in the top of the ninth that got that run back, scoring classmate Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.). Vanasse went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and two runs scored.
  • The Mariners worked themselves into a jam once again in the bottom of the ninth, as Saint Michael's brought up the potential game-winning run to bat with one out and the bases loaded. SMC was able to get one run in on a sac fly, before senior Grant Corb (Katy, Texas) finished the save by getting the final batter to chase a fastball high and away for his second K of the inning.
  • Sophomore Tommy Payton (Palm Harbor, Fla.) earned the victory after tossing 3.2 inning of relief, allowing just two hits with two walks and striking out one.
