SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Feb. 27, 2022) – The USMMA wrestling season came to an end this past weekend at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Springfield College. The Mariners had three wrestlers place in the top-eight in their brackets to earn All-Region honors and the team scored a total of 44.5 points which was good for 12th place in the region.

Senior
Dominick Esposito (Marlboro, N.J.) had Merchant Marine's best finish, coming in fifth place at 174 with a 3-2 record with two pins. He reached the semifinals of the main bracket before dropping his next two matches. He finished his career with a win via fall in 1:55 over Coast Guard's David McCullough.

Fellow senior
Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 184 pound bracket, as he also had a 3-2 record with two pins and a major decision.

Freshman
Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) closed out his stellar rookie campaign with an eight-place showing at 141, as he earned two victories via falls.

Each Mariner that wrestled this weekend had at least one win – Esposito and Sims both with three; Pinc and freshman
Tharen Burns (Spring Valley, Calif.) at 157 with two each (Burns with two pins); and one victory apiece for freshmen
Cameron Pleninger (Havre, Mont.) at 133,
Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 149,
Eric DeWald (Marshall, Va.) at 165 and
Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) at 285 (Pleninger and DeWald via pins, and Manning via a major decision).
