KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2022) – Junior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) started the season with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate including a triple, RBI and a stolen base on Saturday afternoon against Wells, but the Mariners wound up on the wrong end of a 5-3 decision. USMMA struggled in the field, committing seven errors and allowing three unearned runs. Sophomore
Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) faced a long first inning on the mound, but finished the day with five innings and seven strikeouts while allowing just one unearned run.
Game File
Zanetti started the Mariners' season with a leadoff triple and was quickly brought home on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas). Zanetti made it a 2-0 game in the second inning with a single down the left field line that brought home freshman
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.). USMMA's final score came in the third on the strength of a
Zach Coutts (Grand Junction, Ohio) singe to plate junior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas).
The scored stayed at 3-1 until the seventh inning, where Wells plated three runs with the help of three miscues in the field. The Express added an insurance run in the eighth and Merchant Marine was unable to reach Austin Jorda, who picked up the save.
Chambers put up two hits in the contest while freshman
Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif) was hit by three pitches and found his way on base in four of his five plate appearances.
USMMA and Wells are back in action on Sunday at Bartoszek Field for a double-header of two seven-inning games that begins at 11 a.m. Live stats and a live video feed of every home game will be available on USMMASports.com with links on
