BALTIMORE (Feb. 12, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team competed in the 2022 Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday, hosted by Johns Hopkins University. As a team, the Mariners came in fifth place at the event, fueled by second-place finishes by freshman Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) at 141 and junior James Cruz (Belleville, N.J.) at 184.
 
Both Pinc and Cruz battled their way through their brackets to reach the first-place bouts – Pinc via a decision in the first round and a pin in the semifinals, and Cruz with a bye into the semis where he upset the bracket's top seed, Brad Basham from Washington and Lee by way of a 10-8 decision.
 
In the finals, Pinc suffered a 5-0 decision loss to 141's top-ranked wrestler, Charlie Cunningham of W&L, while Cruz withdrew from the 184 championship bout with a medical forfeit.
 
Three other Mariners reached their brackets' third-place matches through the wrestlebacks – freshman Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 149, classmate Eric DeWald (Marshall, Va.) at 165, and fellow Plebe Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) at 285. All three finished in fourth place, with Garrison joining Pinc as USMMA's two wrestlers on the day with two victories. Garrison, Pinc and freshman Cameron Pleninger (Havre, Mont.) at 133 each combined for the Mariners' total of three pins at the event.
 
Washington and Lee won the 2022 Centennial Team Championship with 97 points, with Johns Hopkins coming in second with 87 points and Ursinus rounding out the top-three with 66.5 points. Listed below are the complete team scores.

The Mariners are back in action in two weeks, when they take part in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship Meet, hosted by Springfield College on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 26-27, where they will look to send wrestlers through to NCAA Nationals in March. Any live links for the Regionals will be posted on the USMMA Wrestling Schedule Page closer to the date of the event.
