NEW YORK (Feb. 1, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team battled hard in the second half, but the first half deficit was too much to overcome in an 82-66 loss to nationally-ranked #6 Yeshiva on Tuesday night at the Maccabees' Max Stern Athletic Center. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 10-8 (7-4 Skyline), while the Macs improve to 17-1 (10-0 Skyline) with the victory.

Three players scored in double-figures for the Mariners, as freshman
Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.) had 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while classmate
Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) added 14 and sophomore
Josh Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.) drained 11 to go along with eight rebounds. Fellow sophomore
Bryce Bristow (Plano, Texas) just missed out on a double-double with nine points and a team-best nine boards.

On the other side, five Maccabees scored in double-digits, with senior Ryan Turell draining a game-high 31 points, while also bringing down eight rebounds. Junior Ofek Reef and grad. student Ethan Lasko both had 11 points apiece, and fellow grad students Jordan Armstrong and Gabriel Leifer contributed 10 each, with Leifer also leading all players with 13 boards for a double-double. Junior Matan Zucker dished out a game-high six assists.

Yeshiva never trailed in the game and held a lead of as many as 21 points, 30-9, at 7:24 of the first half. The Macs went into the locker room with a 17-point advantage, 38-21, at halftime.

The Mariners came out strong in the second half and actually outscored Yeshiva in the frame, 42-40, but the Maccabees' lead never fell below 11 points as they cruised to the home Skyline win.

The Mariners return to action on Saturday, Feb. 5, when they play in the second game of a Skyline doubleheader at the Liebertz Gym against Skyline North Division foe Mount St. Mary.
