MBB Bounces Back With 64-46 Home Skyline Win Over Mount St. Mary

Box Score
Postgame Interviews (McDonough & Vencel)

NEW YORK (Feb. 1, 2022) – The USMMA men's basketball team ended its brief two-game skid with a 64-46 home victory over Skyline North Division rival Mount St. Mary on Saturday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners' record improves to 11-8 (8-4 Skyline) with the win, while the loss drops the Knights to 5-13 (3-7 Skyline).

Three players scored in double-figures for the Mariners with freshman Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) tying for the game-high with 17 points, including nine on a trio of three-pointers. Senior Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) added 16 on 8-of-10 shooting with seven rebounds and freshman Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.) drained 12 points to go along with four steals. Sophomore Josh Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.) led all players in the game with eight rebounds, while classmate Bryce Bristow (Plano, Texas) had four noticeable blocks.

Merchant Marine shot 49.1% from the field (27-for-55), while holding MSMC to just 27.7% (18-for-65) and forcing 16 Knight turnovers that led to 23 points for the home side.

It was tight early, as Mount St. Mary held a one-point lead, 20-19, at 9:15 of the first half, but the Mariners rattled off 12-straight on a four-point play by Kauffman, followed by three-straight layups by McDonough and another by Bristow that made it 31-20 at 5:11. USMMA took an eight-point advantage into the locker room at halftime, 35-27.

The Mariners made the first basket of the second half and didn't see their lead fall back under double-digits the remainder of the afternoon, as they avenged their tough one-point loss to the Knights back in December.

For Mount St. Mary, junior Chris Yearwood matched Robinson's game-high with 17 points and grad. student Paul Sienke contributed 11 points. Sophomore Connor Cyran led the Knights with seven boards.

The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday night, Feb. 9, when they travel up to Skyline North Division opponent Purchase College for a 7 p.m. tipoff. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
