Mariners Reach Third-Straight Skyline Championship Match With Sweep Of St. Joseph’s-L.I. In Semis

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2022) – The USMMA women's volleyball team is headed back to the Skyline Championship Finals for the third-straight season, as the top-seeded Mariners defeated visiting #4-seed St. Joseph's-L.I. on Thursday night in straight sets (25-18, 25-13, 25-15) in a semifinal matchup inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 15-6 overall, while the Golden Eagles close out the year 17-12.
 
Match Links Seniors Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.) and Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) both recorded double-doubles as Hyun led all players in the match with 26 assists, while also tying for the match-high with 13 digs and Smith did not have a blemish on her hitting on the night, as she finished with a match-best 16 kills with no errors on 28 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage, while also picking up 11 digs.
 
Tying Hyun with a match-high 13 digs was junior Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas), who also had five kills, while classmate Meredith Buchanan (Kathleen, Ga.) added nine kills and put down a match-high three blocks on the night
 
For the Golden Eagles, junior Madison Gremli had a team-best eight kills, while junior Katie D'Angelo dished out a team-high 21 assists and senior libero Kellianne Dempsey picked up 10 digs to lead her team.
 
The Skyline Championship Match, which will be played at the Liebertz Gym this Saturday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m., will be a repeat of the last two between the Mariners and Manhattanville College. The Valiants were the #3 seed in the Skyline Tournament and defeated #2-seed Farmingdale State on the road in straight sets in Thursday's other semifinal.
