Men’s Soccer Falls To Manhattanville On The Road, 1-0

PURCHASE, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team dropped their road contest to the Manhattanville Valiants, 1-0, on Wednesday night. In their fourth 1-0 game of the season, the Mariners could not find the twine against last season's Skyline Conference runner-up. With the loss, USMMA fell to 4-3-5 (1-1-4 Skyline) with the loss, while Manhattanville's shutout victory improved their record to 7-3-1 (5-0 Skyline).

Game Link Coming off their 4-2 road win at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, Merchant Marine was unable to carry their momentum into a matchup with the Valiants. USMMA managed only two shots in the first half, but pushed back in the second half with six shot attempts. Four of the Mariners' eight shots made their way on goal. For the game, shots favored Manhattanville 13-8 overall and 5-4 in the on-goal department.

Junior goalkeeper Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) did his best to keep in team in the game with four saves on the night. Carey got the call between the pipes for the second straight match after net minding USMMA to their first conference win of the season against the Bears back on Oct. 1.

A goal from Jostyn Blanco at the 16:59 mark of the first half was the match's lone tally. The Valiants' strong defense that has only allowed one goal in conference play held off the Mariners despite USMMA's second half push.

Merchant Marine's push came from two of their hot hands. Both freshman Clayton Ecalono (Pleasant Grove, Utah) and sophomore Jason Healey (King George, Va.) fired two shots on goal. Ecalono's quickness has brought junior Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas) a welcomed speedster on the offense, while Healey was looking to extend his two-game goal streak to three against the Valiants.

USMMA will turn the page and head to Western Connecticut State for a non-conference matinee with the Wolves this Sunday, Oct. 9. Game time is set for 1 p.m. up in Danbury, Conn. Live stats and a live video feed of the contest will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
