Mariners Down St. Joseph’s-Long Island, 3-1, On The Road Monday Night

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2022) – On Monday night, the USMMA women's volleyball team quickly got back in the win column with a 3-1 road victory at St. Joseph's-Long Island at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Center Gym. The triumph improves the Mariners' record to 7-4 (4-1 Skyline), while SJLI falls to 7-6 (2-1 Skyline) in defeat.

Match Link Senior Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) recorded yet another double-double, as she led all players on the night with 15 kills and 17 digs. She hit at a .313 clip and also served up a match-best five aces to finish with 20 points.

Two other Mariners also registered double-doubles – junior Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas) had 11 kills and 11 digs, and senior setter Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.) dished out 34 assists while picking up 15 digs.

Junior Meredith Buchanan (Kathleen, Ga.) contributed 12 kills, while junior Amy Jones (Roscoe, Ill.) chipped in with six. Defensively, senior libero Skyler Burnham (Reading, Pa.) finished the night with 12 digs.

After Merchant Marine won the first two sets by the scores of 25-18 and 25-21, the Golden Eagles extended the match with a 25-18 victory in the third set. In the fourth set, the Mariners jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but St. Joe's scored four-straight to force a USMMA timeout. Play was back-and-forth from that point, with KP building up another big lead and SJLI coming within three yet again at 16-13.

At 19-14 in favor of the good guys, the Golden Eagles called a timeout and then slowly chipped away at the lead until they got within one points, at 24-23, forcing the Mariners to call timeout themselves. They went on to win on the next point, an attack error by St. Joseph's.

For the Golden Eagles, sophomore Jackie Wolf had a team-best 12 kills to go along with eight digs, while junior Tara Langford dished out 32 assists and senior Kayla Martin picked up 17 digs to tie Smith for the match-high.

Up next, the Mariners host St. Joseph's of Brooklyn this Wednesday night, Oct. 5, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the match will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
