Volleyball Wins Electric Five-Setter Over Hunter On Senior Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2022) – What a Senior Night it was for the USMMA women's volleyball team on Thursday, as the Mariners went the distance to defeat a worthy opponent in non-conference foe Hunter College, 3-2. The crowd inside the Liebertz Gymnasium was loud and electric to help lead Merchant Marine to its 12th win of the season – the Mariners move to 12-6 overall, while the Hawks fall to 15-6 in defeat.

Match Links Prior to first serve, the USMMA women's volleyball program paid tribute to its four graduating seniors with a special Senior Night ceremony honoring Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.), Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.), Skyler Burnham (Reading, Pa.) and Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.).

Merchant Marine dropped the first set, 25-23, but rallied to win the next two, 25-20 and 26-24. Hunter prevailed in another close set in the fourth, 25-23 to force a decisive fifth set, but it was the Mariners who got the hard-earned victory with a 15-12 decision.

Four Mariners recorded double-doubles on the night, with Smith leading the way offensively with 19 kills to go along with 21 digs. Junior Meredith Buchanan (Kathleen, Ga.) registered 16 kills and 16 digs, classmate Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas) chipped in with 13 kills and 11 digs and Hyun dished out a 52 assists, which tied her career-high, while also picking up 15 digs.

USMMA also got career-best contributions from junior Amy Jones (Roscoe, Ill.) with 10 kills and Burnham with a team-high 25 digs.

For the Hawks, Mariam Ouattara led all players in the match with 20 kills, while Tionna Moss had 16 and Simone McIntyre recorded 11. Freshman setter Bethany Tomaneng had an impressive match-high 57 assists, while senior libero Nadia Lau picked up 29 digs – the most on the night for either team.

The Mariners are back in action on Tuesday night, Oct. 25, when they play host to Skyline Conference opponent Purchase College beginning at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the match will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
